Emily’s Lock Down Mix Tapes: ii

It’s mix tape Wednesday! Here is another list of 8 songs I’ve been listening to in lock down with a bit on what they mean to me or what I’ve been getting out of them.

  • Coffee at 11
    Held Down – Laura Marling
Well I wasn’t expecting to discover a new all time favourite album in lock down but when Laura Marling released Songs for our Daughter I was mesmerised. Every song on this album is just delightful and they move at the perfect pace for lock down – pootling along and looking at life. Her harmonies are beautiful and honestly I’m just so in love so get yourself your 11am coffee and think about life with this beautiful tune.
  • Waking up at the weekend
Woman of the World – Donald Byrd
I had the most lovely Saturday morning last week: I woke up, lifted the blind (which I can do from my bed) and let the morning sun flood the room, I texted the family Whatsapp asking for a cup of tea (nobody obliged), and put this song on my speakers (also doable from bed). It was the most beautiful vibey moment and I managed to find some gratitude amidst this difficult time.
  • Last whisky before bed
Bell Bottom Blues – Derek & the Dominoes
I don’t know about you but my family can get quite boozey together and by the end of the night we also get sentimental. This is a classic song to accompany the last whisky and last thoughts of the evening.
  • Mid-afternoon sunbathe
    Don’t Go – Hothouse Flowers
My Dad pointed out that, with the blossom tree in our garden in full bloom and the sun beating down, the first few lines of this song are so appropriate. We are in bluebell season and the world has given us some incredible weather. Enjoy it all.
  • The beginning of the end of your run
Left Hand Free (Lido Remix) – Alt J
Granted the beginning of this song might be a bit atmospheric for exercise but it really builds up and makes you feel so sassy. This song really speeds me up – especially around the 7th km of a 10k run.
