Life is back to normal now. I mean, I’m still working from home but I’m in my actual flat living my actual life. AND PUBS ARE SET TO OPEN ON 4TH JULY!
There are a lot of different opinions on social distancing and I’m finding it hard. People who were breaking lock down early on are now die hard lock down fans and vice versa. People get really upset by it and all the while I just want to see my friends without breaking the rules.
At least we still have music. Find the full playlist here.
- Weeding
You’re Gonna Need Me – Dionne Warwick
Having seen how much joy gardens can bring we’ve decided we need to make more of our outdoor area. This starts with weeding, which has been decidedly therapeutic in this lovely weather. Dionne Warwick is probably most famous for Walk On By and Do You Know the Way to San Jose – I’m not sure how I came across this song but I’ve loved it for a long time now.
- Evening pre-G&T Yoga
Souda Bay – DJ Telefkas
Now I’ve become such an expert in yoga I can do some of my own flows and don’t have to follow videos. This means I can choose my own music and I find what I want really changes depending on the time of day. This is a bit beach-side cabana-esque but I suppose I am probably craving a beach-side cabana so am getting involved. Just imagine sipping on some mental cocktail that the barman has tried to impress you with while the DJ smashes this out in an almost empty bar on the beach. A slight breeze and the promise of a fun evening to come. Ahhhh….
- I May Destroy You
Only Child – Tierra Whack
I haven’t really mentioned series I’ve been watching. I’ve only watched one episode of BBC’s I May Destroy You but I already love it and the way the music has been done. In fact – I’ll name drop – my sister works in ‘sync’, which means her job is to get her company’s portfolio of music into tv/film/adverts. She got some music in this series. Proud sis.
- Teeth brushing in the morning
Le Monde est Fou – Johanna Shimkus
Come on you can’t help but love this. This was sent to my team from one of our French colleagues as a soundtrack to our move towards a post-Covid life. I’d never heard it before and love it.
- Hosting early evening in the garden
Got Til It’s Gone – Janet Jackson
My dad can’t stand Janet Jackson. Oh well. I love how this sounds like it’s from the 90s but actually came out in 2006. I love that it samples Joni Mitchell and I love the atmospheric video (which I have only just seen). These mix tapes have been a really good exercise in actually watching music videos. I used to watch them loads as a kid!
- Cooking without a recipe
Nterini – Fatouma Diawara
… cooking without a recipe never works out too well for me. Last night it was a very watery tomato pasta situation. Fatouma Diawara is absolute royalty but I hadn’t heard this song until recently. Her most famous album I think is Fatou from 2011 but definitely check her out for her incredible modern African music.
- Reading the morning newsletters
Footprints – Ezra Collective
If you like jazz and don’t know Ezra Collective then I don’t know what’s going on. An incredible group of talented London boys pushing the new-wave jazz scene in the UK and managing to make it mainstream… in a good way. So great to simply vibe out on and get lost in.
- Painting ya nails
New Love Cassette (Mark Ronson Remix) – Angel Olsen
I’ve only just started painting my nails again and I feel like I have my life much more together now. It’s nice. Angel Olsen is an incredible artist – her album All Mirrors got sooo much love and you can see why. If you want some pure, raw emotion check out her song Chance; my friend said he couldn’t help but cry his eyes out when he heard it in the bath. Quite the imagery.
