Emily’s Lock Down Mix Tapes: xii

You might have noticed that I missed the mix tape this Wednesday. Ha – I’m sure nobody noticed. It seems life is speeding up again and so I am calling this my final mix tape.

Today is July 4th. The day after I turned 26 (I feel old) and the day that pubs were allowed to open again. I am on my way to celebrate a double birthday with some of my best ever friends.

The full playlist is here – I promise it’s turned into a damn good playlist.

  • Getting ready for your first proper pub session in MONTHS
    Pretty Baby – Sister Sledge
There’s something about this song – I think it might be the key or scale they use or something. There’s something ever so slightly melancholy to the melody but it’s still an upbeat Sister Sledge disco banger.
  • Attempting to walk off the previous night’s foggy head
    Vienna – Billy Joel
Uh how damn good is this song?! I love doing a bit of self contemplation to this. I’ve only recently discovered it but my parents tell me it was underrated in its day. I think I might think that Billy Joel is the best songwriter ever. Yep. I said it.
  • Finishing up a late night work sesh with a mint tea
Bright Baby Blues – Jackson Browne
If there’s one man who could rival the claim I just made about Billy Joel, it’s Jackson Browne. I always find his songs so emotional and soul searching and yet they’re so comfortable too. My friend used to sing this in pubs and I used to fall in love with him every time he did.
  • Vibing around the kitchen table
    Pace – Nubya Garcia
I’ve not put much jazz into these mixes, which is strange as I listen to a lot of jazz. Nubya Garcia is total royalty and I love the journey this track takes you on. You can get completely lost in it.
  • Darting around the bedroom getting ‘kind of’ dressed for a day working from home
    Little Lady – Mega Jawns
This is a strange little song but it’s got an amazing atmosphere. I discovered it a couple of years ago and keep coming back to it. I tend to keep it to myself though – I wouldn’t put it on when hosting. Don’t know why, just wouldn’t.
  • Trying not to think of the summer you would have had
Now Is The Time For Love Pt 1 – Darrow Fletcher
Ok let me set the scene. I first heard this song while cooling off in the sea in Albania. I was at Kala festival last year – a new festival set in the ‘Albanian Riviera’ in Dhermi. It was HEAVEN. Music was going from around 3pm until 7am every night and the daytime vibes were always exceptional. I had to wade in from the water to shazam this track and I’m so glad I did.
  • Sunday morning cheese sesh
You To Me Are Everything – The Real Thing
It’s got key changes and everything you could wish for in Sunday cheese. I’ve just noticed this gets sampled quite a lot in dance music. I won’t apologise for this – just put it on and enjoy.
