Emily’s Lock Down Mix Tapes: vii

Can’t believe this is the 7th one of these.

This week we celebrated my sister’s birthday and I realised I’ve been BRAINWASHED by her and her boyfriend into listening to much more pop music. I’ve never had anything against listening to pop… it’s popular for a reason blah blah blah… but is it really me? God I don’t know. Who even am I?

As ever, find the full compilation of lock down songs here.

  • Pretending you’re Taylor Swift in your old home town
Cowboy Take Me Away – Dixie Chicks
Something I’ve managed to largely keep under wraps is my total adoration of country and western music. God I love the Dixie Chicks. I think it started with Jackson Brown and just got more and more… country, I suppose. This is a beautiful song and it just makes me feel like a little girl daydreaming.
  • Learning a dance routine with your sister
    I Know Alone – HAIM
From one killer sister act to another. I think it’s fair to say these sisters massively inspire me and my own sister – and not just to learn their quirky dance routines (which you can actually learn live with the girls online every Sunday). My sister and I have been doing a bit of dancing to keep fit and it ALWAYS lifts our mood.
  • Should have gone to bed hours ago…
King in my Empire – Rhythm & Sound with Cornell Campbell
I really love the vibe of this. It feels like something you’d see at a tiny festival where nobody is famous and this would be the first act despite it suiting 4am much better than 4pm. You’d be there with your warm cider, absolutely loving life, surrounded by a load of local 16 year olds lighting up. Heaven. It’s part of an anonymous project linked to Moritz Von Oswald. Mental but brilliant.
  • Afternoon walk epiphany
    Wait – M83
You might have noticed I have a few of these. Again, this came on when I was on shuffle and it just seemed really perfect for lock down.
  • FINALLY spring cleaning
    Ravi – Caribou
You’ve got to have something uplifting playing for a big clean. This is off Cariou’s genius album Suddenly but wasn’t released as a single. Issa vibe guys.
  • Getting all dressed up in your summer dress and makeup to go to Waitrose
    Utrus Horas – Orchestra Baobab
Another vibe. This is sunny days, feeling a bit sassy and beautiful and soaking up the rays.
  • Going on a socially distant walk with you ex because you haven’t self sabotaged in a while
    Me & U – Cassie
An absolute classic banger… and don’t judge me on the above..!
  • Reconnecting with a childhood friend
    We Were Children – Tribes
Ok yes, they clearly thought ‘I know, let’s sound just like Pixies’ but I don’t mind. It’s noughties indie rock and it makes me feel nostalgic. It feels a bit like indie is making a comeback but that might just be me.
